Good Shepherd Sunday
In the Second Reading for the Fourth Sunday of Easter we find the following statement, “Beloved: See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are.
The reason the world does not know this is that it did not know him.” In many ways the world still does not know him. This is why the account from the Acts of the Apostles, found in the First Reading, is so important. We are told that despite the fact that they have been arrested, the Apostles, filled with the Holy Spirit, fearlessly witness to Jesus. We are called to do the same so that we will make Jesus known to the world.
The Fourth Sunday of Easter is also Good Shepherd Sunday. The Gospel speaks of Jesus, who as the Good Shepherd, knows and loves the sheep. He is also willing to lay down his life for the sheep. This is the image of God that we need to proclaim to the world so that many can come to know Him, love Him, and serve Him. The Church also celebrates the World Day of Prayer for Vocations this Sunday.
On this day we focus on those who make Jesus known through their calling as a religious sister, brother, deacon or priest. Let us pray that in the Diocese of St. Catharines many young men and women will generously respond to God’s call to service in the Church.
Let us make a particular effort during our 60th anniversary year to promote vocations in our homes, schools and parishes. May Christ the Good Shepherd watch over His flock and help us to know Him and proclaim Him to the world.
