Fifth Sunday of Lent
The Gospel of the Fifth Sunday of Lent begins with a group of Greeks asking Philip, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” Today people continue to seek Jesus. We see this in the many individuals that enter the RCIA process. They desire to know, love, and serve the Lord as members of His Church. There are others who are still searching; however, they do not know who they are looking for. St. Augustine certainly was part of this group and he was searching in all of the wrong places. In his autobiography (Confessions) he wrote, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” St. Augustine reveals a very important truth: we are made for God and there will be no peace in our lives unless we are united with our Creator. The restless heart searches for God. In the First Reading, the prophet Jeremiah was helping the people to “know the Lord.” He told them that God will write on their restless hearts. For He is their God and they shall be His people. Like Jeremiah, we need to help people know the Lord. Whether we are clergy, religious, or laity, we need to try to tame the ‘restless spirit’ within ourselves and within others. The more that people can see Christ in us, the more we can help them to have peace in their lives " “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”
