Fourth Sunday of Lent: Laetare Sunday

In the Gospel for the Fourth Sunday of Lent, Jesus speaks about people who “loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil.” We know that there are people today who continue to love the darkness and they try to draw others into the shadows. This often happens by obscuring the truth. This is seen in the recent phenomenon of ‘fake news’ or ‘alternative facts’; it seems that honesty is not always seen as a virtue. There are others who try to draw us into the shadows of confusion regarding the important moral issues of our day. Like Jesus, our response should not be one of condemnation. We need to lead people to the light of the truth; Jesus is that truth. He is the light of the world who came to save all people. In the Gospel, Jesus tells us that, “Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.” He was lifted up on the cross so that we might be saved and receive eternal life. The cross becomes our sign of hope. Like Nicodemus, there are many people who are searching for the truth. They find themselves in the shadows and need the light. Let us help to “enlighten” them by witnessing to Christ, for he is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
