The Feast of the Epiphany of Our Lord commemorates the event when three wise men or magi came to Jesus by the guidance of a star in humble adoration and offered gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Theologically, Epiphany represents the manifestation of Jesus to the world as the Son of God. The world responds (represented by the Magi) with joy and adoration. This attitude is expressed so well in the First Reading by the Prophet Isaiah who states “Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice.” The Lord the light of the world has been made known to us and we rejoice. Like St. Paul in the Second Reading we have been given a grand commission by our salvation. We have been chosen to make Christ known to the world. To be an Epiphany for all we meet and serve. Do we “thrill and rejoice” at this calling? Perhaps as we begin a New Year we can spend some time reflecting on the Epiphany and the great gift we have been given, “not gold, frankincense or myrrh but he who by them is proclaimed, sacrificed and received, Jesus Christ” (Prayer over the gifts).
