The Blessed Mother reflects her Divine Son

The following quote is attributed to the Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen: “God who made the sun, also made the moon. The moon does not take away from the brilliance of the sun. All its light is reflected from the sun. The Blessed Mother reflects her Divine Son; without Him, she is nothing. With Him, she is the Mother of men.” As we celebrate the Feast of Epiphany, we see the theme of light in our Readings and prayers. The prophet Isaiah states, “Arise, shine, for your light has come…Then you shall see and be radiant.” In the Gospel we see the significance of a star that leads the wise men to Jesus. Even the Collect of the Mass makes reference to this, “O God, who on this day revealed your only Begotten Son to the nations by the guidance of a star…” As we know, a star is a sun and the moon reflects the light of the sun. A moon is totally dependent upon the sun for its brilliance. From a spiritual perspective, the closest “star” to us is the Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and Mary is like the moon. Following the example of our Blessed Mother, we are called to reflect the light of the “Son” to the world. We must humbly admit that we are nothing without that divine light. We will then be able to fulfill the words of Isaiah, “For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the people: but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light…” As we begin a New Year, let us turn to our Blessed Mother who reflects her Divine Son. May her prayers assist us in being another Christ and in “enlightening” others. Let us be truly “wise” like the magi and follow that star!
