The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

Agatha Christie understood the value of a good mystery and as result became one of the world’s best known authors. This Sunday we celebrate The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity and we are presented with a great mystery. The challenge for us is to appreciate its spiritual value in our lives for it is far greater that any literary work. The mystery of the Trinity reveals that God is a community of persons in profound relationship with each other: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The mystery of the Holy Trinity reveals that God is one and at the same time three Divine Persons. The holy exchange that exists between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is what brings life and love to the world. Through our baptism, we are drawn into the life of the Trinity. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “From the beginning, the revealed truth of the Holy Trinity has been at the very root of the church’s living faith, principally by means of Baptism” (CCC 249). We are called into community and into relationship with our God and one another. We come to know that God is with us and in us. This is why our parishes are so very important. They provide the opportunity to gather as a faith community to experience God’s presence. We gather in our parish each Sunday and enter the mystery of the Trinity. We hear our God, we receive our God, and we form His body as we gather in praise and worship. We enter into a profound relationship with God and one another. This is a very practical message for us today. Since our God is a community of persons we also need community. As Jesus reminds us in the Gospel, there are many things that we cannot bear alone. St. Paul states in his Letter to the Romans that we can endure and have hope because of the love of the Trinity that is poured into our hearts. The Father loves the Son, and the Son loves the Father, and the fruit of their love is the Holy Spirit. We are the beneficiaries of this great mystery. “O most Holy Trinity, Undivided Unity, Holy God, Mighty God, God Immortal be adored.”
