Second Sunday in Ordinary Time: The Wedding Feast of Cana
In the Readings of the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time we are presented with the Wedding Feast of Cana. (John 2:1-12) Our Blessed Mother was present with her son Jesus at this celebration.
In order to save the bride and groom embarrassment because “the wine gave out”, Mary interceded on their behalf with Jesus. She instructs the stewards to “Do whatever he tells you”. Here we witness the first public miracle of Jesus who turns the water into wine. Our Blessed Mother continues to intercede for us from her place in heaven. I believe this is especially true for married couples.
We know that marriage today is under a great deal of pressure. Some are trying to undermine its very definition which we find in the First Reading from Isaiah, “For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your builder marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.” This truth is the teaching of Our Lord.
Let us listen to the words of our Blessed Mother and humbly follow what Jesus teaches. Mary, Mother of God, pray for us.
