The Ascension of the Lord
This Sunday, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of our Lord. In the Gospel of St. Mark Jesus gives the great commission to his disciples: “Go into the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation” (Mk 16:15). We live in a world where there is a great deal of “bad news” and at times we can feel overwhelmed and even begin to despair. We do need the “Good News” to lift our hearts and give us hope. The good news proclaimed in this Sunday’s Gospel is that we can do great things in Christ’s name. All we need to do is to believe that this is possible. When Jesus ascended to the Father, He did not abandon us. He sent us the Holy Spirit (Pentecost). It is precisely through the power of the Holy Spirit, who dwells within us, that we can do great things. We are called to do all things in Jesus’ name in the power of the Holy Spirit. We are blest in our diocese to have the Holy Name Society. This venerable confraternity understands the power of the Holy Name and is able to do many good works. I am grateful for all they do in our parishes. Let us continue to do great things in the Lord’s name as we “proclaim the good news to the whole creation”
