Non-Permissibility of Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide within Canadian Health Organizations with a Catholic Identity

On November 30, 2023, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops released a statement on the Non-Permissibility of Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide within Canadian Health Organizations with a Catholic Identity. It is important for the bishops to speak out about this pernicious practice that is starting to impact the mission of our Catholic hospitals and hospices. Canadian statistics indicate that Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) numbers have grown by 31 percent compared to last year. This growth trend has existed since MAiD was legalized in 2016. In light of the expansion of MAiD to those suffering from chronic mental illness, things are going to get much worse in the new year. In the face of a growing acceptance of this practice, even among Catholics, we need to stand firm in our resistance and remain committed to the truths of our Faith.
