In the First Reading for today’s Mass (Friday, June 16) we hear these beautiful words from St. Paul: “Brothers and Sisters, we have this treasure in clay vessels, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies.” As we all mourn the loss of our dear brother Father Trevor Plug, these words seemed to take on greater significance as I celebrated Mass this morning. Despite our great sadness we do not lose hope. As a priest, Father Trevor carried within him Jesus Christ, a treasure beyond price. As an Alter Christus he was able to touch many people by drawing on his own unique experience. Fr. Trevor had the extraordinary power to never give up and, with God’s grace, was able to overcome adversity. This offered great hope to many. Although he only served as a priest in our diocese for 13 months, I know that his witness will continue to bring graces to our diocese for many years to come. We will all miss our dear brother and we pray for all those who mourn, especially his family, friends and the parishioners of St. Alfred Parish. Eternal rest grant on to him, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him. May Father Trevor’s soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
